"I believe that when riders understand their horse and follow the classical training scales, they will achieve their goals.  Their horses will be safer to ride, stay sounder longer and be more successful."

From the beginning, Jane Armour comforted me with her encouraging manner and timeless knowledge.  I thought if I felt this way around her, what would be my horse’s reaction to her?  My horse’s response was similar to my own.  He shows great respect towards her.  This respect has brought on an air of confidence and willingness to follow her lead.   She is a true and classical leader in the horse world, with an undeniable inclination to favor the betterment of the horse; both in mind and body.   Her art of teaching both the rider and horse, at the same time, makes the lessons understandable and rewarding.  Jane makes schooling a horse less of a chore and more of an enjoyment with victorious conclusions. Jane has a keen understanding of the biomechanics and psyche of the horse. As such, she focuses first and foremost on a horse’s health and happiness in her training.  Joe Fazio,  CA

I could write a book on Jane's attitude while teaching. It is her calm manner most of all that keeps our frustrations low, knowing that if we take things one at a time and learn them well, we can do nothing but become better riders and also have strong confident horses. Jo-Anne Fazio, CA

Jane was giving conformation evaluations so I made an appointment for her to check out my horse, Harley, and for us to check out Jane. Five minutes into the evaluation, I knew I wanted to train with her. I had been having problems getting Harley to relax, and knew I needed to find a trainer who would take the time needed to help him, rather than beating him into submission.  What makes Jane so great? In addition to her outstanding background in riding and training she just plain gets horses. And their owners. And she trains each horse and rider as individuasl, not in a "one size fits all" manner that is all too common.

During our first lesson, Harley repeatedly threw his head in the air, swerved unexpectedly away from the rail and tried to run back to the gate. Jane surprised me by saying that she loved that he had the confidence to do that. She told me that he was looking for a fight, and he wasn't going to get one.  I never would have been able to find anything positive in that lesson, but Jane did. I went home that night feeling hopeful. But we had our work cut out for us. Harley is a strong soul who stands up for himself and resists any kind of aggressive or forced training.  Gentleness and patience were the only methods that would work with him.  Fortunately, that is how Jane trains, and he is responding beautifully.

I rode with you in New York.  I just wanted to tell you that riding with you was probably the best coaching experience I have ever had.  You have such a wonderful way of breaking concepts down into their simplest form and making it all make sense - finally!  For many years, instructors told me "how" without ever having an understanding for the underlying "why".  I truly appreciate your approach, and your philosophy of developing thinking riders.  Every lesson I had with you, I had at least one proverbial "light bulb" moment.  Thank you and congratulations on your book.

Jane is a world class teacher, rider & coach. Jane easily pinpoints training areas that need improvement and then provides the basis for the improvements through systematic ridden and non ridden exercises that can be progressively linked to help both the horse and rider to make quantum leaps in their riding and training in very short order. She is a positive and supportive coach who can definitely help you achieve your next level of riding.

           Before and After

A lovely Fresian horse with natural presence.  He was hollow and lacked understanding of the basic foundation steps, relaxatkion, rhythm and contact.  He needed to gain confidence in his movement, step forward more from behind, lift his back and stretch forward to the contact.

In schooling, one improves the natural gait and self-carriage.

Same horse nine months later - he is more confident, taking a bigger stride and has developed a good 'working trot'.

He achieve this by the rider maintaining a consistent allowing contact and using small leg aids to ask him to take the longer step without getting quicker in speed miles per hour.

He became easier to ride and most important of all, was using his joints more effectively and thus will have less concussion related lameness when older.

Correct training is about the quality of the work.  The importance of including the horse in the process and feeling what they need in that moment. Ask you horse a question;  it's OK if the answer is YES or NO.

Patti and I have been studying good horsemanship for 30 + years and your teaching style, which helps horses and people come together is one of the best.  I realy enjoyed the process.

With Jane's help I was able to introduce Merlin to the double bridle in a way that allowed him and I to get the feel of the double reins and increased collection.  He was happy and kept going forwards.  More, more, more information.

Five years ago, I obtained a lovely-minded horse with physical challenges.  During these past years, I've used various riding instructors, trainers, a physical therapist, a chiropractor, farriers and MANY alternative therapies to help this horse.  But  there have been constant setbacks. Jane and I together watched a recent video of me riding this horse.   NEVER have I had pointed out to me such insightful, correct, classical and informative instruction to help this horse through riding and lunge work.  I now see biomechanically how these techniques can help horses have a sound and happy future.

Specifics on what will benefit my horses at this point in their training.  Explanation of why, effect and how beneficial.
Feedback on rider position and how it influences the horse.

The unique thing I have found from Jane’s clinics is that I can follow the progressive steps Jane uses with the riders and horses.  I understand the process.  Jane explains what she is doing and why in a way that I am able to simulate when I ride at home.  I also received a written assessment covering four points; my position, the horse’s way of going, exercises used and recommendations.  In addition, I have e-mail access with Jane for any questions that come up.   Kathy Flynn, OR
